COLUMBUS — A retiring Colorado County Sheriff’s Office sergeant recently received honors for 42 years of service.

The Colorado County Commissioners Court lauded Carol Richter during a recent session by citing her years of “outstanding and dedicated service.”

“I would like to thank the citizens of Colorado County for allowing me to serve them these last 42 years,” Richter said.

She graduated from Rice Consolidated High School in 1979 in Altair.

By July 14, 1981, she started her career at the Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher.

According to information provided by officials, after only a few months of working as a dispatcher, then-Sheriff James Broussard wanted to add women to the rank-and-file as deputies and asked Richter if she was interested in being sponsored at the academy.

Richter accepted his offer and attended the law-enforcement academy at Wharton County Junior College. At the time, she continued working nights as a dispatcher from midnight to 8 a.m. while also attending class 6-10 p.m.

She graduated March 1982 from the academy.

Richter also received her certification as a jailer through a correspondence course.

She also trained to book inmates, perform court duties as a bailiff and took on transportation responsibilities.

In 1988, she was appointed to the Civil Process Division and became sergeant of the unit in 2001, where she remained until her retirement July 31. Richter said she plans to enjoy her days traveling, spending time with friends and taking care of her parents.
