A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

This column is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus – our town.

I hope you have had time to celebrate football season being here. The terrible heat makes one wonder just how the players survive and reach the level of fitness that allows them to play a full game.

It was such a pleasure to see the Cardinals scrimmage against the Sealy Tigers on Thursday, August 17th. The scrimmage made the fans eager for the opening game in Giddings on Friday, Aug 25 at 7:30pm. It’s really a pride thing when the Columbus fans practically fill the stands on the visitor’s side on “away” games. Our team is sure to understand that Columbus fans’ presence is a tribute to Cardinal tradition.

When the coaches line up for the kick-off, there is one man rather easy to identify... Coach David Johnson, who on September 13th, will celebrate his 80th birthday. Those who know Coach Johnson credit him with an important influence on the success of the Cardinals. Coach Johnson has had the pleasure of coaching and teaching some students who are 3rd generation under his guidance.

Coach Johnson, “if asked “, considers himself a mentor to Head Coach Matt Schobel. When Coach Schobel asked Coach Johnson to join his staff... Johnson was not quick to accept. Actually, Johnson told Schobel that he would have to talk with his prayer warrior- sister Diane. Diane did pray and called David back to say, “It’s a go!”

Watching Coach Schobel and Coach Johnson’s strong and dedicated collaboration is no doubt a winning formula.

Let’s talk about our role as spectators. First, let’s try to wear our red & white. Cheer for good plays, band, and dance performance. Refrain from obnoxious, inappropriate, and uncalled for derogatory remarks against referees and players. Remember, you’re wearing your school’s colors.

Thanks to the young athletes, their parents, our teachers and coaches, the administration, staff, volunteers, and school board. God bless America and men like Coach David Johnson
