Ladycats take second in Schulenburg silver bracket

The Weimar Ladycats’ varsity volleyball team took their first losses of the season last week as they travelled to face Round Top-Carmine to start the week and then to Schulenburg to take on a tournament at the end of the week. After their loss to start the week, they went on to perform well in the tournament with three match losses in their seven attempts in Schulenburg.

Vs Round Top-Carmine, L, 3-1 The Ladycats competed well to start their week despite suffering their first loss of the season. Many of their sets were highly contested as Weimar scored at least 20 points in three of their four games in the match.

Weimar took the advantage in game one to start the match. They took a 25-20 win to claim an early advantage. However, Round Top-Carmine responded with a win in game two by the same score to tie the match series at one set apiece.

The Ladycats had their most struggles during the third set as they managed just 13 points in a difficult loss to fall to the brink of a match defeat. They competed well in the fourth set but fell just short in a 25-22 defeat to clinch the match.

Vs Brazos, W, 2-0

Weimar got their trip to Schulenburg started with a quality win against the Brazos Lady Cougars. The defensive gameplan for the Ladycats proved to be an imposing force for Brazos as Weimar held their opponents mostly in check.

Weimar took the first game by their biggest margin in a 25-11 victory to set the tone. They followed up by winning a competitive set to clinch the match, winning game two by a 25-18 margin.

Vs Goliad, L, 2-1

The first loss of the tournament for Weimar came in a competitive match against Goliad as both teams found plenty of success offensively.

The Ladycats fell just short in game one, losing by a 25-21 margin before responding with a 25-18 win in game two. Weimar stayed competitive in game three, but they fell just short of a win as they lost the clinching game by a 25-20 margin.

Vs Rice, W, 2-0

In a matchup of Colorado County counterparts, Weimar took the advantage as they had a solid performance defensively against the Lady Raiders. The Ladycats did not allow their neighbor school to reach 20 points in either set of the sweep victory.

The two teams had their most competitive game in the opener as Weimar claimed a 25-17 victory to take the first set. The second set was not nearly as close as the Ladycats dominated in a 25-9 win that clinched the match for Weimar.

Schulenburg, L, 2-0

Weimar suffered their first sweep loss of the season against the tournament hosts after a competitive first game and a difficult offensive outing in the second set.

The Ladycats came close to taking a win in the first set but fell just short in a 25-23 defeat to open the match. They ran into some difficulties on offense in the second set, falling to their opponents by a 2516 margin to take their second loss of the tournament.

Vs St. Joseph (Victoria), L, 2-0 The Ladycats withstood their second sweep defeat in a row after facing off against a difficult opponent for their second match of the second day. Weimar once again had some difficulties on the offensive end in game one, managing just 16 points in a tough loss to start the match. The second set went much better for the Ladycats as they reached the 20-point threshold for the first time. However, their score stopped right at 20 as they fell in a 2520 defeat for their second- straight match loss.

Vs Yoakum, W, 2-0

Weimar got back in the winning column after a big win against a competitive Yoakum team that pushed the Ladycats in both games of the sweep.

The Ladycats managed to stay just ahead of the Lady Bulldogs as the two teams battled through a tight match. Weimar finished both games with the same scoreline as they completed the sweep with a 25-23 margin in each set.

Vs Industrial, W, 2-1

The Ladycats took their second win in a row after overcoming some adversity to start their run in the bracket portion of the tournament. After finishing pool play with a few losses, Weimar earned a spot in the silver bracket that included one of their rivals, the Shiner Lady Comanches.

In a close opening set against the Lady Cobras, the Ladycats fell just short of a win by falling in a 2523 defeat in game one.

Weimar responded by increasing their defensive output as they held Industrial to 21 points in the second set and just 18 points in the third set as the Ladycats took two games in a row to claim victory in the silver bracket semifinals.

Vs Shiner, L, 2-0

In the silver bracket championship game, the Ladycats matched up against Shiner for a chance for first place. However, Weimar did not get the start they wanted against their rivals as they fell in a 25-17 defeat in game one. The Ladycats turned things around somewhat in the second set as they crossed the 20-point threshold and made the game competitive. However, Shiner took the late advantage in the win-by-two situation with a 26-24 victory that secured first place for the Lady Comanches.
