Columbus has top five runner in Rice CXC meet

ALTAIR – The Columbus cross-country team started their season with the Rice 3000 as they try to repeat their performance from their strong season last year. The Cards regional runners from last season will be hoping to reach peak form early on and find their pace as they navigate a season with a lot of promise. After a season opening run, the Cards will be looking to continue their improvement as the season progresses.

The Cards regional runners from last season will be hoping to reach peak form early on and find their pace as they navigate a season with a lot of promise. After a season opening run, the Cards will be looking to continue their improvement as the season progresses.

Columbus finished the meet with a single runner placing in the top five following the competition.

Three Lady Cards claimed spots in the top 20 after the season’s first meet. Kaylea Foster took the fifth-place spot after finishing the race in 12 minutes and 41 seconds. Last year’s state qualifier, Chloe Ross, finished her attempt in 12 minutes and 55 seconds which secured an eighth-place finish. Scarlett McClelland and Samantha Gonzales finished in 18th place and 22nd place respectively to round out the Lady Cards’ outing.

The boys’ side of the competition saw regional runner Will Fitzgerald lead Columbus with a time of 11 minutes and 16 seconds. His time earned the 16th place spot in the meet. Elijah Owen had a sub-12-minute race as well and placed in 24th with a time of 11 minutes and 46 minutes. Keegan Escamilla finished 10 places behind in 34th to complete the day for the Cards.
