Columbus youth track performs well at state

BROWNSVILLE – After several strong performances at the regional youth track meet, the CYFF track team continued their momentum in the TAAF state competition. Many athletes made it to the Finals with several placing in the top-3 spots and claiming a medal position. With some help from some varsity Columbus competitors, the CYFF team had a quality outing as a team.

BROWNSVILLE – After several strong performances at the regional youth track meet, the CYFF track team continued their momentum in the TAAF state competition. Many athletes made it to the Finals with several placing in the top-3 spots and claiming a medal position. With some help from some varsity Columbus competitors, the CYFF team had a quality outing as a team.

The first day featured just a pair of athletes as Samaria Willilams for the 8U age group and CHS athlete Scarlett McClelland performed well for CYFF as they finished as some of the top performers in their respective events. Williams qualified for the finals in the 50 m sprint as she contributes to a quality group of 8U runners. McClelland took silver in the triple jump after finding a high level of success in the event during last spring’s varsity track season. McClelland would go on to compete in the long jump finals where she placed fifth while Williams and the 8U girls went on to compete in the relay race.

Williams, along with Zavrie McCathern, Zaniyah McCathern and Elliot Davis went on to take sixth place in the finals. Kamry Dillard assisted as well, running with the 8U girls during the prelims relay race.

Williams also competed in the 200 m dash on the second day of the competition. Jaycee Hayes-Woods competed in that event as well, and Arielle Martin competed in the 400 m and 100 m runs on day two.

The 10U boys’ relay team of Dajhon Houston, Braylon Carter, Jude Heffley and Simeon Williams competed on the second day as well but did not reach the finals.

The third day of competition featured many field events as Zaniyah McCathern, Davis, Layla Henneke for the girls and Braylon Carter and Kiyan Johnson for the boys all took on the long jump competition on the final day of prelims. Johnson’s 12U teammates Levi Emmons and Rafael Zefferino competed in the high jump and the shotput throw respectively. Another Columbus varsity runner, Ty’Vone Whitehead, also competed in the 100 m sprint prelims The day of the finals featured the state-champion 8U girls’ relay team along with Martin who competed in the 400 m finals and Williams who competed in the 50 m finals.


Scarlett MccClelland finished with the silver medal in triple jump and took a top five spot in the long jump competition.
