The Weimar Wildcat football team has officially released their schedule for the 2023 season with several games coming against familiar opponents from last season. Not only will the Wildcats take on each of their opponents from last season, but they will face them in the exact same order as well. Weimar is hoping they can get a few better results this year as they look to improve upon their 3-7 overall record and their 1-5 record in district competition from last season.

The Wildcats start their season with a scrimmage against Van Vleck on Aug. 11 at home for a small tune-up before they have a second home scrimmage the next week against the Raiders from Rice on Aug. 17. After the scrimmages, Weimar moves on to their non-district schedule hoping to repeat last year’s performance with two wins in the first four games.

Weimar begins the regular season on Aug. 25, hitting the road to face off against John Paul II at 7 p.m. for a repeat of last year’s opener. The Wildcats are hoping that they can repeat their performance as well as they picked up one of their biggest wins of the year against the Guardians in a 44-14 victory after dominating on the ground.

The Wildcats hope that they will enter September with a win in the record book before they take on Yorktown on the first of the month. The two teams competed in one of the tightest matchups of the year for either side. The game went into multiple overtimes as they needed a 2-point conversion shootout to decide the victor. Weimar is looking to take the advantage this time as they eventually fell to the Yorktown Wildcats by a 36-34 margin, the smallest margin of defeat for Weimar last year.

The Somerville Yeguas host Weimar on Sept. 8 after allowing the Wildcats to have their biggest win of the season last year in week three. The Wildcats once again dominated on the way to a 61-6 victory and started the season off with two wins in their first three games.

The Wildcats will be looking for some redemption this year as they lost their next five games against their matchups following the Somerville game. Weimar will face off against Snook for their first home game of the regular season on Sept. 15 before hitting the road again to take on Holland on Sept. 22. Thrall visits Weimar on Sept.29 before the Wildcats travel to Thorndale on Oct. 6 to compete against the Bulldogs. The Wildcats host Hearne on Oct. 13 for their penultimate home game this season.

There is plenty of opportunity for the Wildcats as each of these losses came by 10 points or less except for the 49-7 defeat to Holland last season. The Wildcats lost a 20-13 matchup to Snook before the Holland game, and went on to fall 21-13 to Thrall, 34-26 to Thorndale and 34-24 to Hearne. With such close games, Weimar will be entering that stretch of the schedule hoping to turn some of their losses from last year into victories.

Their second-to-last game of the season is against the Schulenburg Shorthorns away from home on Oct. 22 as Weimar hopes to repeat as the victors from last season’s 12-7 win. Their final game of the season comes against a difficult Flatonia team that gave the Wildcats a 64-27 defeat in last year’s finale. Oct. 27 marks Weimar’s last home game as well as the final matchup of the regular season. Weimar is hoping that if a few more plays can go their way this season, they will be able to finish higher in the district standings than their sixth-place finish last year.
