Communities who serve

Colorado County is filled with many organizations and outstanding individuals whose focus is simply–to serve! An appropriate tag line might be, “A Community of Service.” Difficult to name all the service organizations, but from the people of Columbus and throughout Colorado County a very large, “Thank You” to all the organizations, their members, and any who volunteer hours of their life to serve in their communities and for all they give to create, support, and grow a deeper quality of life.

The serving community is often a diverse mix of people who for whatever reason, and for whatever purpose, find themselves in the same part of the world—serving, working, and living alongside each other. Sharing time, resources, and energy to accomplish good things to help keep their, and sometimes others’, community strong.

There is an almost void presence of competition among the service/volunteer groups in Columbus despite the inevitability of chasing competing dollars. Rather, there seems to be an honor system in place that respects the other’s separate endeavors as each push to accomplish their own particular vision and goals. It’s encouraging, rewarding, and underlines that a better community happens when each does their best, right where they are small or large planting seeds of hope, helping where and how possible. Here at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce we have our own member stepping up to serve as we kick off an updated version of the monthly Lunch & Learns beginning August 15. The Lunch & Learns are member only events with limited space and will be held at the Nesbitt Memorial Library. The first one will focus on grants. We are calling it “Grants: The Nuts & Bolts” with Lindsay Mc-Nutt conducting the workshop. Lindsay has her Master of Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) degree and currently manages research grants for the University of Texas. She is volunteering her time to serve, where and how possible, in her community. Thank you, Lindsay!
