The Weimar Wildcats’ varsity hoops team got off to a strong start to their week after a complete performance against the Bloomington Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Their offense and defense came together well as they outplayed their opponents from the opening tip off. However, on the following Friday, Shiner came into town to stifle the Wildcats offensive attack on the way to a blowout victory in Shiner’s favor.

Vs Bloomington, W, 49-33 The Wildcats did not have many difficulties scoring against Bloomington away from home as six different players were able to score at least two points. Weimar had a strong offensive game overall, scoring double digits in every quarter but the third period. They had their game-high period in the second, in which they scored 19 points and outscored their opponents by ten points. The Wildcats had their roughest quarter in the third with just three points, but their defense helped them prevent any damage after holding their opponents to just five points. The Wildcats outscored Bloomington 15-11 in the final frame to hold on to the victory.

Brady Henke, the season’s leading scorer, once again took the pole position on the scoreboard with a 24-point effort. He was followed by Jerron Fisher who had a solid two-way game, picking up 10 points to go along with a team-leading five steals. Dreylon McMillian had the highest total of rebounds with seven, as well as the third-highest total of points with six.

Vs Shiner, L, 48-34

Weimar’s home game against Shiner came with the direct opposite outcome on the offensive end from their game earlier in the week. The Wildcats struggled to score as they failed to reach double figures in any quarter but the final frame. Weimar scored just 10 points in the first half as they had difficulties finding effective offense. However, the Wildcats held control for much of the game in that first half despite their scoring slump. They held Shiner to just three points in the first and four points in the second to take a 10-7 lead into the locker room, created by their stifling defense.

Outside of halftime, the Comanches came out as a different team offensively. They scored 19 points in the third while holding Weimar to just seven points. The Wildcats responded with a 17-point quarter in the fourth, but Shiner had over 20 points in the final period to put the finishing touches on their victory.

Dreylon McMillian had the most effective game for Weimar with 13 points and seven rebounds, both of which led the team in their respective categories. Derek Rees finished with eight points and six rebounds to take the second spot in both categories, and Huxton Kloesel was third in both with seven points and five rebounds. Rees also added a team-leading three steals to his stat line.
