Age to file for jury duty exemption changes

According to the Colorado County Elections Office, the H.B. 2015 has amended the Government Code to raise, from 70 to 75, the age at which a person qualifies for an exemption from jury service on the basis of age and the age at which a person may claim a permanent exemption from jury service.

According to the Colorado County Elections Office, the H.B. 2015 has amended the Government Code to raise, from 70 to 75, the age at which a person qualifies for an exemption from jury service on the basis of age and the age at which a person may claim a permanent exemption from jury service.

The elections office said the bill’s provisions apply only to an exemption from jury service for a person who is summoned to appear for service on or after the bill’s effective date.

This bill goes into effect on Sept. 1. The elections office said individuals turning 70 after Sept. 1 will not be eligible to obtain the permanent exemption from jury duty until they turn 75 years of age. For those who have already filed for a permanent exemption, their status will not be affected.
