The Columbus varsity boys’ soccer team constantly created opportunities for themselves during Tuesday night’s Jan. 17 game against Smithville. By putting pressure on the box offensively, Columbus weakened the defense and even earned a penalty kick chance from their efforts. The Cards were able to convert on many of their opportunities as they had a huge-scoring game, taking a big 4-2 victory over the Tigers.
The Cards were aggressive offensively as they peppered the opposing goalkeeper with shot attempts. They finished with 16 total chances at goal after nonstop offensive pressure. Freshman Giovannia Martinez was the first to strike true with a goal at the half hour mark. Five minutes later, Jesus Mendoza fired a shot off of a pass from Tomas Elias to double their score and eventually finish the half with a 2-1 lead. In the second half, Mendoza scored again and Columbus earned a penalty kick opportunity as well. Freshman Telmo Murga calmly slotted home the penalty chance as the Cards finished a huge offensive effort against their opponents.
Smithville also applied some strong pressure with their two goals, but they could not consistently get the best of goalie Carson Beettner. Beettner finished with seven saves as he helped limit the damage from Smithville’s offense.
