The Weimar Ladycat softball team has deservedly received many plaudits at the state level this offseason following their 2023 State Championship run. It was Weimar’s sixth championship since 2003 as they’ve become a modern era softball powerhouse of the last few decades. As times changed and quality players rotated in and out of the Ladycat lineup throughout the years, there was one person who oversaw everything from day one, writing the lineups himself. Roger Maupin, Weimar’s head coach for each of their state titles, received recognition from the Texas Sportswriters Association after leading the Ladycats through one of their toughest postseason runs in recent history.
Maupin got some top performances from his senior class as he relied on their clutch hitting and some standout pitching performances from Reagan Wick. Another one of his seniors, Paige Pavlu, delivered the game winning hit to secure the championship for Weimar. Maupin has credited the team’s “timely hits” as a major key to winning this year’s title, including Pavlu’s walk off. The team finished with 39 total wins, their highest mark since the 2021 season.
Maupin instilled a belief and a sense of resolve amongst his players. They had several opportunities in the playoffs to prove their resilience, coming back from a 7-0 deficit against Shiner to tie the series and force a game three, and coming back against Como-Pickton in the Championship Game to win in dramatic fashion. They had to overcome their past failures as well, taking the advantage over a Crawford team that stopped Weimar’s 2022 championship hopes. The Ladycats withstood the pressure against the rest of the state’s top teams with a mix of elite pitching and strong hitting from veterans as well as underclassmen.
