Colorado County Little League has a few teams heading to their respective Sectionals tournaments after finding victory in the district and claiming district championships. Last season, Columbus had a high level of success in Sectionals as four Columbus Little League teams moved on to state and a few teams even won their respective state championships. While there were not as many teams that moved on to Sectionals this season, the softball Majors for Columbus and the baseball Minors for Weimar each put together some of their best play to claim their district championships and reach the sectional tournament. The Weimar boys got their sectional tournament started with a game against Lufkin on Monday, while the Columbus girls start their action Wednesday, July 5 in Schulenburg.
The path for the Weimar Minor league All-Stars was not a defined route by any means as there had never been a Weimar district champion at that age group in Weimar Little League history. But as they paved a new path forward for their program, they also put up some impressive performances that helped them claim the district championship and secure their spot in the sectional tournament. Their journey started with a game that established confidence amongst the team as they faced off against Washington County Little League, a program that had four different teams win their district championships this season. The Weimar Minors were not intimidated by their opponents and took a 6-4 win to start their run. They followed with a huge scoring victory in 14-8 win over Burleson County and then another big win over neighboring Rice Little League with a 13-point shutout. Weimar finished pool play with another game against a county rival as they faced off against the Columbus Little League Minor All-Stars. They once again showed off their defensive prowess with a strong 6-2 victory to move on to bracket play. Once the elimination rounds began, Weimar got a chance to show off their offensive prowess as well. They started the bracket with a big 8-5 victory over Bellville to move on to the Championship game against Twin Cities. With the district championship on the line, Weimar had a huge offensive night to help them take the district championship with an undefeated record and move on to the Sectionals tournament against Bastrop. Results of that game were not available by the press deadline.
The Columbus girls faced a bit more adversity on their path to the district championship and a bid into sectionals. They started their district tourney run with a tough, one-run loss to Sealy Little League in a 7-6 defeat. With only one more loss to work with before elimination, Columbus responded with a huge 18-0 victory over Burleson County as they dominated in every phase of the game. They had a similarly dominant effort in their next game against Twin Cities as they won with another double-digit shutout. The Majors defeated Twin Cities by a 17-0 margin to set up a crucial rematch against Sealy, the team that gave Columbus their only loss. The Majors were intent on changing their fortunes from the last time the two teams faced, and the close margin gave them confidence that they would be able to recover in the rematch despite the heightened stakes. Columbus would have to win two games in a row against Sealy to claim the district title as Sealy had not taken a single loss by that point. The softball Majors took care of business in the first game, taking a 5-1 victory to push Sealy to the brink. A victory in the final game would secure their spot at the next level as they looked to defeat Sealy in back-to-back games. Columbus came in with an intense level of focus, beating Sealy in a 10-0 victory to move on to Sectionals.
