COLUMBUS – The public is invited to attend the Columbus Education Foundation’s “Launch Party” on Saturday, July 22, 4-6 p.m. at Hound Song Brewery.

“ We’re cal l i ng it a ‘Launch’ since this is our first community-wide campaign to build scholarships,” Becca Edmiston, CEF committee chair, said. “We’ll have light refreshments and a cash bar serving beer, wine and soft drinks. There’s no entry fee. All proceeds from a raffle and ‘Cakes ’n More” auction will generate funds for Columbus High School scholarships. Bring your friends and enjoy the festivities!”

CEF is a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation founded to enhance educational opportunities for Columbus Independent School District students. Part of the mission is to create more scholarships for college and trade schools. With more community awareness, CEF hopes that even more scholarships will emerge through donations and memorials. The launch will share more about what’s happening to boost opportunities for young people beyond high school graduation, according to a release.

CISD board member Robert Russell commented on the work of CEF, “I am excited that scholarships not only go to students attending academic colleges, but also to students who are going to career or technical schools as well. This will have a great impact on a diverse population of students.”

He continued, “With the IRS designation of 501(c) (3), the Foundation has the ability to accept contributions and donations that are tax deductible to the donor. Then, the foundation is able to invest these funds before dispersing them to students. Even small donations can add up to make a huge difference for our students.”

Superintendent Jim Connor explained that prior to CEF, there was no easy “process” or system to handle donations for scholarships, according to a release. He encouraged Thomas B. Hancher, MD and Patsy Hodge to create a non-profit organization independent of Columbus ISD. “CEF is helping our students get a head start on their career choices. CEF’s work has created additional excitement among the students to apply for scholarships.” Scott Leopold, CISD Chief Financial Officer added, “CEF has helped to level the playing field for college and trade school attendance for students.”

Those interested in participating in helping grow scholarships for CHS grads can do so by providing a baked item such as a cake, pie or cookies for the auction, or donating an item for the raffle, call 979-7332122. CEF said all proceeds go to scholarships to make a difference in the lives of our young people.

CEF board members include Thomas B. Hancher, MD (president), Pastor Willie Mae Axel Williams, Rachel Post, Shannan Gerik, Becca Edmiston, Phillip Garcia, and Patsy Hodge. Advisors/consultants include Michael Trefny, Chris Arthur, Robert Russell, Jim Connor and Scott Leopold.
