The teams of Columbus Little League had varying levels of success this past week as they each neared the end of their district championship runs with hopes of moving on to the next level. Some teams realized their hopes by responding to adversity and claiming strong victories to seal the championship win. Other teams ran into some struggles as they faced some of the other top teams in the area. The result was a week of intense little league action that saw the major softball girls claim a championship while the major league boys and the minor teams for softball and baseball saw their seasons come to a close.
The Major softball All-Stars battled through some initial adversity on the way to their District Championship. They began the tournament with a difficult loss to Sealy in extra innings that sent the team to the loser’s bracket with one more loss meaning elimination. They responded with a big win against Burleson County LL before winning against Twin Cities to keep their season alive and set up a rematch with Sealy. Columbus got their revenge on the team that gave them their opening loss, and they set themselves up for a tiebreaker against Sealy in the championship game. Columbus found another win against Sealy to claim the championship and move on to the Sectional Tournament.
The Major baseball boys saw their season come to an end after suffering their second loss of the tournament. They responded to a tourney-opening loss to Washington County with two straight wins against Burleson County and then another against Grimes County to keep their hopes alive and stave off elimination. With some momentum on their side, they travelled to Bellville to compete against Weimar LL for a chance to move on in the tournament. The Major team from Weimar got out to a quick lead against Columbus as Weimar took a big victory over their Colorado County rivals.
The Minor softball team also had to battle some adversity along with some adverse weather conditions. Columbus started their tournament with a tight victory against Bellville before taking another strong victory over the Weimar Little League girls. They got to a 3-0 start after beating Sealy before moving on to face Washington County. The Minors could not find a way to claim an advantage as they suffered their first loss of the tournament. They responded to the loss with a big win against Burleson County which had been undefeated up to that point of the tournament. However, their momentum did not carry over into the championship game as their rematch with Washington County went poorly in a big shutout defeat to end their season.
The Minor baseball team started their district title run with a tough loss to Washington County Little League. They found a response against the Minors of Rice to bring their record to 1-1 before taking a second-straight victory over Burleson County. Their season came to an end after suffering their second loss of the tournament, this time to Weimar LL who had claimed the top seed in the tournament.
