WEIMAR – The Weimar Public Library, 1 Jackson Square, presented live snakes at its Texas Snakes and More program, Monday, June 19.

The free program, sponsored by the Friends of the Weimar Public Library, featured herpetologist Clint Pustejovsky with 120 attendees, according to a release.

The library said Pustejovsky of Texas Snakes and More brought along four snakes for children and parents to touch and hold. During the program, Pustejovsky explained and debunked some common fallacies people have about snakes, discussed the four venomous snakes common to the area, pointed out quick steps to take if bitten by a venomous snake, and delved into the general nature of most snakes, according to a release.

The library said the herpetologist calmly introduced children to the reptiles he brought for them to meet. He encouraged them to feel comfortable by referring to the reptiles by their names: Sonny, the yellow albino Burmese python; Dobby the Trans Pecos rat snake; Fred, the orange-colored albino corn snake; and Missy, the African Ball python, according to a release. The library said younger guests seemed to enjoy petting and observing Todd, the South American red-foot tortoise.

The goal for the Texas Snakes and More program is to educate as well as entertain its audience. Besides presenting programs about snakes the company works with clients on snake proofing, safety education, capture and removal, according to a release.

Those interested in learning more about snakes can check out books from the Weimar Public Library.

The next program hosted by the Friends of the Weimar Public Library will be Wednesday, June 28 at 2:30 p.m. The library will present “Music for Kids” with Will Parker, a songwriter and teaching artist. The library said the program is an interactive, fun, energetic, creative way to teach you to tell your own story.
