A Columbus alum with a unique skillset has earned a chance at worldwide recognition with his abilities. Gaming speed runner Cameron Divin is a recent graduate of Columbus that holds the top five in several world records for his game of choice: Minecraft. His most recent speed run vaulted him up the ranks internationally after finishing with the second-fastest time in the world, just over 15 seconds slower than the all-time world record.
Divin’s talent in regard to gaming has been part of a lifelong development process that has allowed him to reach the heights and accolades. Playing since he was six years old, Divin had a strong pull to Minecraft that eventually played a huge role in his recreational life as well as his competitive drive. The varsity baseball player for the Cards brought his competitiveness over to the gaming sphere where he has consistently been near the top for certain categories and events for speed running in Minecraft. He reached a level of international acclaim after his most recent official speed run video on YouTube that marked his second-place record worldwide. The video currently has 15 thousand views on the site and nearly 250 comments as Divin’s page gained a lot of attention after his near, record-breaking run. The video features a touching moment as he celebrated his top-3 all-time finish with a call to his mother to share the news. His channel “thecamo6” has over 1.3 thousand subscribers as he has created an audience that eagerly awaits Divin eventually challenging the world record again and taking it for himself. With 1.5 thousand followers on twitch and fans from around the world, Divin already has some experience with having international acclaim. However, next month will be a step even he may not have seen when he first logged in to the randomly generated world of Minecraft.
Divin will travel to Paris to compete in the Minecraft Grand Championship Tournament to establish himself as one of the top speed runners in the world in a live environment. Amongst the other best players in the world, he hopes he can set himself apart from his fellow world=class players to take his abilities and acclaim to an even higher level.
While Divin continues to improve his skills as a speed runner, he is staying well rounded as the state-qualifying academic competitor continues his education this fall at Texas A&M where he will be pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering.
