Cardinals take top 10 placement at state

AUSTIN – The Columbus Cardinals’ golf team had a strong total performance at the UIL State Championship Meet that had its first day on Monday, May 22. They placed in the top 10 as a team on each day as they finished in ninth place overall from both days in the meet. The Cards were led by their top individual performer, regional champion Kaldon Roensch, after he secured a top-25 spot in the tournament. Cullen Loessin was not far behind, and the rest of the Cards finished around the middle of the pack as they took one of their highest finishes in their history at the state meet.

They placed in the top 10 as a team on each day as they finished in ninth place overall from both days in the meet. The Cards were led by their top individual performer, regional champion Kaldon Roensch, after he secured a top-25 spot in the tournament. Cullen Loessin was not far behind, and the rest of the Cards finished around the middle of the pack as they took one of their highest finishes in their history at the state meet.

Columbus took ninth place after shooting a 344 on their first day as a team and then responding with a 338 the next day in an improved outing. Roensch took the lead for the Cards after carrying over the momentum from his regional- winning performance. He shot an 84 on the first day before dropping his second day score to 78 for a total of 162 strokes. Loessin placed six spots below Roensch after shooting an 82 on the first day and then finishing with an 83 on the next day for a total of 165. Adam Schobel shot a 90 on the opening day but dropped his score to an 89 on the second to finish at a 176-stroke total. Camden Pitchford and Trace Braden finished back-to-back on the scoreboard as they both finished shooting an 89 on the first day of the tournament. Pitchford shot a 91 on the second day while Braden shot a 93 on the second as they finished with totals of 180 and 182 respectively.
