The Lone Star Cup is a point-based tournament that spans all UIL-sponsored events. All varsity sports, creative UIL events such as band and one-act play, as well as academic competitions are included in the school’s overall score and ranking.

Specifically in sports, the Columbus Cardinals have quite a few different teams that added points to their cause and helped them climb up the rankings. Just in the spring, the Cardinals had a handful of track athletes reach the regional level during the season and even had a sprinter, Ty’Vone Whitehead, reach the state level for Columbus. The baseball and the softball team each reached the regional semifinals after having the best seasons in their respective programs’ histories. Madyson Carter, Camdon Pitchford and Jesus Mendoza represented for Columbus tennis at the regional level as well. Earlier in the spring semester, the Columbus girls’ basketball team made it one step away from playing in the state championship game as they had their deepest postseason run in history to the state semifinals. The golf teams for Columbus have added large contributions to their point total in the Lone Star Cup rankings after their performances in the UIL postseason. Both the girls and the boys reached the state level after taking second and first place respectively at the regional level. Both teams also had strong performances at state as they each took a top ten placement at the season’s top meet.
