COLUMBUS – The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run returned to Colorado County on Thursday, May 18.
Law enforcement officers came from the Houston area to help support the initiative of this run which is to benefit the Special Olympics. The officers met at Blakes’s Kitchen and started their run down Milam Street, going pass the Courthouse, City Hall, St. Anthony’s Catholic School, and even stopping at the home of Paul Weido, who is the brother to Colorado County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Investigator Andrew Weido. Each year the officers stop at the home near Front Street before continuing on their run. Sergeant Weido has been involved with the torch run for over thirty years.
The group of officers returned to Blake’s Kitchen for lunch and then prepared to head to San Antonio on Friday, May 19, for the Opening Ceremony for Special Olympics State Games.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics started in 1981 by Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, and is Special Olympics’ largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle in the world, according to a release. The organization said law enforcement officers throughout the world carry the “Flame of Hope” through the streets of their communities and deliver it to their local, state, national or world Special Olympics Games.
