Every year, Turtle Wing Foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors from Fayette, Lavaca, and Colorado counties pursuing college and/or a trade school.
According to a release, the three scholarship categories are the Jack Hooper Memorial Scholarship awarded to a student who has exhibited the qualities of acceptance, kindness, inclusion, and service. This might be through volunteerism, work, or life experiences. The Give Wings Scholarship applicant must be pursuing an education that will lead them to working with children with learning challenges in some way. The Grow Wings Scholarship applicant must be actively participating in special education or following a 504 Plan.
This year, Turtle Wing said it was able to give out five scholarships: Grant Kubala (Schulenburg High School) received the Jack Hooper Memorial Scholarship, Waylon Schimcek (Weimar High School), Colt Freytag (Flatonia High School), and Alessia Martinez (Rice High School) received the Grow Wings Scholarship, and Jacob Seibert (Sacred Heart Shiner High School) received the Give Wings Scholarship.
The Turtle Wing Scholarship Committee said it received over 80 applications and had to make a tough decision, but ultimately decided to award two additional scholarships this year (the foundation usually only awards three) due to the high need and quality of submissions.
