A man and his truck ended up taking a swim in the Colorado River early Monday morning, Dec. 16, after authorities say the man fell asleep while driving.
Columbus P.D. officers responded to Colorado County deputies being dispatched to an accident located near the 697 I-10 Eastbound Exit at approximately 1:05 a.m.
A witness guided officers to the location of the vehicle where they found the truck halfway submerged in the river.
The driver of the vehicle stated that he fell asleep while driving from San Antonio to Bay City and after closing his eyes, woke up when his truck hit the water.
Officers from both agencies helped guide the man back onto land by pulling the driver on to higher ground with rope after he safely exited the vehicle and stood on it.
Authorities drove the man to the Columbus INN located at 2208 SH-71 Loop following the accident to stay until his family arrived in the morning. The Colorado County EMS responded on scene but did not report any injuries to the driver.
“Your volunteers have been up most of the night into the morning helping to retrieve the vehicle and to perform traffic control,” said the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department in a Facebook post.
On the scene of the accident were the Columbus VFD, Colorado County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado County EMS, Columbus P.D. and Delgado’s Wrecker Service.
Authorities were able to retrieve the truck from the river as well as the driver, with the driver sustaining no injuries.
